As I will be putting together a radio show, I’ve had to research popular times for shows so that the show can appeal to the largest audience possible. From my general questionnaire I found that Morning was the most popular time for the radio to be listened to, and the second popular time was the evening. This suggests to me that the radio show should take place within one of these two time frames for maximum consumption. However when asked more specific questions about time in my specific questionnaire 3-5PM was the most popular time people said they listened to the radio, followed by 6-10PM and then 6-10AM. This specifies what time is most popular to the audience, and that my radio show should take place within one of these time periods.
When I asked the question “When do you listen to the radio?” the largest response was whilst travelling. I did not ask for their mode of travel, as I presume this takes into account different types of commuting. For example radio is predominantly listened to in the car, however can now be easily accessed through phones as different radio stations bring out applications for phones. This means that people can listen to the radio portably, possibly on the train or bus. People also listen to the radio whilst working, radio is less commonly brought due to its accessibility on the internet. Many of the popular radio stations have the “Listen Live” feature on their web pages increasing their audience and viewers.
When asked why they listen to a particular station the majority of their answers were due to the music played on the station. However people also said they listened to particular shows because they like the presenter(s) on the show. This shows that people like having the same structure repeated to them, and this continuity is why they tune into the specific show. This means that in order to create a likeable radio show, the presenter must be a friendly and bubbly person able to communicate well across the radio. 2 presenters was the most popular amount of presenters that people like to listen to and I must take this into consideration when planning my show. Shows such as Heart Breakfast have a male and female presenter to make the show more gender neutral, appealing to a larger audience. This would need to be looked at in more detail when planning our radio show.
As our show is going to be a news bulletin the presenter must be able to get information across the audience clearly and easily. Whilst listening to other radio shows they like to say “You’re up to date” after the news. The news, weather and sometimes travel tends to be repeated every 15 minutes on radio shows. This allows the latest news to be transmitted to people but also ensures that everyone knows the latest as everyone tunes in at different times it reduces the chance of someone missing the news.
Most radio stations have to find funding for themselves. Most do this through advertising. People pay the radio station for air time to run their adverts and that’s why most radio stations have adverts between presenting and songs, similar to TV having adverts between shows. However the BBC is funded through television licensing which means that they rarely have to play adverts.
